Baby Rihan, a 5-year-old male child, has been diagnosed with a severe kyphotic deformity of the dorsal spine secondary to collapse of the D11 and D12 vertebrae. This spinal deformity has resulted in significant abnormal curvature of the spine, which may progressively affect posture, mobility, spinal stability, neurological function, and respiratory capacity if left untreated.
After detailed clinical evaluation, the Pediatric Orthopaedic Spine Team has recommended staged surgical correction under the care of Dr. Arjun Dhawale.
The child is scheduled to undergo treatment in two stages:
Stage 1: Halo Traction
- Application of halo traction to gradually correct the spinal deformity and improve alignment prior to definitive surgery.
Stage 2: Definitive Spinal Fixation / Growth Rod Surgery
- Definitive correction and stabilization of the spinal deformity using spinal fixation/growth rods to restore spinal alignment and prevent further progression.
These procedures are essential to improve the child's spinal stability, posture, functional ability, and long-term quality of life.
Following surgery, Baby Rihan is expected to require:
